Sea otter programs promoted at SeaWorld

— SeaWorld marine park and several other organizations around the world are promoting Sea Otter Awareness Week through Saturday.

The local part of the campaign is designed to educate people about the valuable role that California sea otters play in the “near shore” marine ecosystem, as well as the importance of protecting the threatened species.

SeaWorld is making special presentations this week about otters, hosting otter-related craft events and featuring visits from O.P. Otter, a costumed character.

Organizers said the highlight is “Tube Time,” when otters are given frozen tubes stuffed with clams and shrimp. The animals bang the tubes against the wall of their exhibit to dislodge the food.

“Tube Time” takes place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. daily through Saturday.
